DIY: Making over to create the perfect chunky sweater

Remember this shot by Garance Dore I was so captivated by in April? Well I've lusted after that gorgeous chunky aran-knit sweater ever since but just couldn't convince myself to spend RM300 (MNG) or HKD400 (H&M) on it.

And the cravings got worse. It seems the darn things are a trend this season so they're everywhere. On the Sartorialist, on the runway, even on The Man Repeller which I find a great read but not exactly my style guru. I was being haunted by a frigging sweater!

But a perfect sweater would not also cost me an arm and a leg. So... here's how I bought a HKD30 sweater and modded it into my perfect sweater.

This is the after shot. I was so excited by this project that I completely forgot to take before shots. Let's just say it started out more like this - only a whole lot more tent-like.

I found it in the street market right outside my apartment block. They have outlet clothes for sale every now and then and this one caught my eye. I loved the knit, the colour, the scoop neck and the flared sleeves - the only problem was that it opened up after the buttons and made me look like a wig wam.

The first thing I did was to stitch up the part in the centre (from the hem to the buttons) which made it a jumper and realigned it.

Then I put it on inside out, and using the pinch + safety pin method, marked out where my body was.

Then I simply hand stitched the sweater along those lines. I then put it on again, and took it in a little more at the waist.

Finally, I cut off the excess material and hand washed it. Voila! My sweater:

Really love those sleeves!
Now if only the weather would get frosty enough that I could actually WEAR it. I will bring it to Italy and hope.

I can't sew to save my life. Not even buttons! (I know the theory and practised it before, but not practically for real world use.) :P

Oh come on babe. It's poke the needle in and pull it out again!

This was a simple backstitch... I was really surprised how easy knit is to work with. Actually I may be buying a lot more of these cheap oversize sweaters now I know I can take it in. I'd like a sweater dress! =D

Hrm, I wonder if my mom could help me remake some sweaters.

Kuri: heheh you know I learnt how to sew because my mom hated it so much? She taught me so she could foist it off on me. =P
