The Breakfast at Tiffany Necklace

So, if it's not crazy obvious for now I'm gonna spell it out for you. I have a girl crush on Audrey Hepburn. I love her movies and I love her. And come on, who doesn't love Breakfast At Tiffany's? Even if it doesn't always make sense the scenes are just so incredibly lovable. And the clothes.,.. oh man the clothes...

I still dream of getting a dress like the iconic black Givenchy she was wearing, but until then, I finally have my hot little hands on a Diva necklace I've loved for 7 months. It's not identical, but it's definitely close enough to be labeled "inspired".

Pin-Up

If you'd told me that I'd own a sparkly red denim dress a month ago, I'd have laughed in your face. But I found myself strangely drawn to this cute little number. There's something so pin-up and Betty & Veronica about it.

New Haircut

Colour me dense, but until I got my first real haircut (not a trim!) in 5 years, I never realised how severe long hair looked. But the truth is until I found a hairdresser I both liked and trusted I simply couldn't bring myself to entrust a radical change in style to anyone.

My tale of woe when it comes to salons is long. The ones who speak English well are too costly and often, too bossy. Others push chemical processes and "treatments" so determinedly they never give you a moment's peace. And as for the aunty and uncle salons... less done the better.

Oh, and one final complaint. I do NOT appreciate being asked out by a guy who's holding a pair of scissors to my head. Not only is it unprofessional, it makes me uncomfortable and how on earth do you say "no"?

What so great about Uniqlo?

With the launch of the first Uniqlo store in Malaysia coming up next week (Nov 4) at Farenheit88 I've been doing my research online and besides learning that they have the softest t-shirts in every colour imaginable, I can't figure out what the big deal is!

Do they have the best cut jeans for the price? Great white shirts? I hear rumours but no real confirmation because everyone online seems to take the basics store from Japan for granted.

So I'm asking you, dear readers (as Primus Sartorius would say), have you shopped there? What do you think and what should I look out for?

Read on for Uniqlo's launch promotion:

Night on the town

Now you know I'm a big fan of the Little Black Dress but a surefire way to ensure that I don't turn up in one is to specify the dress code as "black". I'm stubborn like that.

But I'm first to admit I love a chance to dress up and try out new evening wear and this is an idea I've been toying with awhile. I paired a gold corset-like top with a black pencil skirt and bolero. As Zouk club was absolutely freezing when not full of sweaty gyrating teens, I was very very grateful for the bolero. And the company of freezing Connie &  ParisB. ;)

Oh and this was the launch of Hugo Boss Bottled Night at Zouk KL. Ryan Reynolds attended the US launch... but not the M'sian one. Alas...

SUIT UP DAY!

EDITED so video works!

The Suit Up site recommends that on this day of awesome days you... (and your man):
SUIT UP in honor of Barney Stinson, the suit-wearing womanizer we all love. If you don’t know who Barney is … ask your friends, they will tell you.

SUIT UP because suits are AWESOME, even if you don’t like Barney.

Things to do on International Suit Up Day
• Wear a suit to work
• Wear a suit to university
• Wear a suit in hospital
• Wear a suit to school
• Buy a suit
• If you see someone without a suit, tell them to go home and suit up, or convince them to watch How I Met Your Mother
• Drink in a suit – if you can find a bar called McLaren’s, drink there
• Party in a suit
• Play laser tag in a suit…. What up?

If you don’t have a suit, you’d better start looking for one right now. You have till midnight.

Suiting Up

This Wednesday is International Suit Up Day in honour of How I Met Your Mother. One of my favourite sit-coms. I thought of publishing this on Wednesday, but decided it would only be fair to give you a few days to get those suits ready.

Also, in all fairness I doubt I'll be wearing a full three-piece, it's just too damned hot in this country!

Guest Post: Suit Up Series - Materials

Primus Sartorius returns to instruct on selecting the right material for your suit.

Now, my dear readers, having surveyed—alas, all too briefly—the three domains of bespoke, made-to-measure, and off-the-rack, let us now take a step back and look at the wonderful, varied world of materials that can be used to make a suit.

First, we must mention (in passing only) the synthetic materials: polyester and microfibers. For the love of God, ladies and gentlemen, stay away from this unless you are a disreputable American named Larry. (Those born in the 1980s who had access to computers in the 80s and 90s will know what I am talking about. Those who do not, there is always Google.)

Now, with that dismal fabric consigned to the place it so rightly belongs, let's take a brief meander through the natural fabrics that have historically been used to make suits: cashmere, cotton, flannel, herringbone, linen, seersucker, silk, tweed and worsted.

DIY: Make over hair clips with nail polish

Here's my random crafty project of the week. I found I had two of these red clips - and seldom used either because they just seemed cheap and plasticky in my hair. So I grabbed a bottle of nailpolish that I (again) seldom use and painted it over...

No more vintage clothes at Amcorp mall! =(

I have some sad news. Today, I headed over to Amcorp for my usual frock-fix only to find the third floor devoid of the vintage and overstock dress stalls - including my favourite, the one run by Chia.

I dropped her a message and learnt to my dismay that the mall's management had banned all those clothing stalls. Only the sports t-shirt ones were left! I have no idea what their reasoning is, but I believe it's a mistake and I for one will be going to Amcorp purely for Book Xcess now and no other reason. I'll also be going a whole lot less so they'll be missing out on my custom - and my mom's too. She only goes for the dresses.

Chia has plans to move into her own shop and promises to keep me informed. I, in turn, will let you ladies know as soon as I do.

Shoe Obsession

So it's entirely possible that my shoe collection is getting out of hand. Believe me, this is probably less than half of the total. My parents have given me this much space, but I doubt they're about to keep giving me storage space.

So far the best idea I have to maximise this space is to use these clear shoe-box drawers from Ikea:
