My style icon: Blair Waldorf

A bitch she may 'B', but one cannot deny that Leighton Meester's character on Gossip Girl, Blair Waldorf, has style.

Kahani maintains that she absolutely cannot stand the series, and while I admit there has been the odd occasion that I've wanted to hurl things at my screen while watching it, it remains for me a guilty pleasure simply because of the divine clothes.

As I lay in bed (sick) a few weeks ago having a Season Two GG marathon, it suddenly hit me how much I adore Blair's dress sense, and how elements of it have slowly crept into my wardrobe--the frills, the bows, the vintage-inspired pieces.

Blair's penchant for pops of colours and girly, feminine dresses have me completely looked. So what if her wardrobe costs more than what I'd probably make in my entire lifetime as a struggling writer--there are always ways of emulating her style without paying through the nose!I liked how as the seasons wore on, her dress sense became more grown up. Of course, she's pretty much always toed the preppy line; I loved how classic cuts like pencil skirts and empire-line dresses, with classy accessories like pearls and silk scarves kept on popping up.

It's also great that she dresses sexy without necessarily showing off too much skin, unlike her best friend Serena Van der Woodsen, played by Blake Lively. All in, element's of B's fashion sense is preppy yet fun, which make it ideal for a young working professional like myself.

However, given Malaysia's utterly dismal state of office fashion (if you find yourself asking incredulously, "What office fashion?" I have totally proven my point) I figure I'd better tone it down a little, so as not to give those corporate bigwigs a heart attack.

Zephyr, the editor at College Fashion gives you a rundown here (so I didn't have to do it) on how to dress like Blair Waldorf.

Say what you will about her character on Gossip Girl, Queen B has style. You know you love her.

xoxo

Violet shimmer

You know the dress that you couldn't walk away from even though you knew it was impractical, out of budget, and required special underwear? This shiny purple frivolity, is mine.

I knew shimmery satin was unforgiving, but I loved it. I knew that the demure purple print would make it too casual for evening, too posh for day, but I loved it. I knew the sexy back would need stick-on-bras, but I loved it.

I love how it's sweet yet kinky, demure but sexy, unforgiving yet flattering. I'm so glad I didn't walk away from it. Now I just have to figure out where to wear it too! Suggestions?
And forgive the matchy-matchy outfit I found this pair of old sandals with purple sparkly butterflies in my cupboard and can't quite believe they're still good to go. They were a gift from two unimates about 5 years ago! The right one is from Christina and the left, from Jay. Thanks darlings, I still love them to death!

Weinies Weinies Everywhere!

Printed all over my dress :)

I love spending hours in the massive craft stores in the US. It's art waiting to happen! I got this "Weinie dogs in Sweaters" material from a craft store that specializes in a wide variety of fabrics. There are tons of ready made pretty floral dresses out there. As much as I myself adore roses and daisies, the quirky part of me is drawn to the novelty fabric section. Usually, fabrics from this section are used to make quilts, pillow cases and house decor, etc. So not for dresses.

I say pfft to that! I don't see why I can't make Scarlett proud and wear what some people use to make curtains.

I am not a pro at my own sewing machine yet, unfortunately. So, I got a very lovely young lady to make this dress for me based on a rough sketch and ideas from dresses I already loved. She charges way less than some of the places I approached in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. They wanted to charge me rm150-200 plus my own material. Erm, WUT?!

Anyhoo, this dress combines all my favourite dress details. Halter neck. Sweetheart neckline. Waistband. Smocked back. Flared skirt.

Hmmm...I originally wanted to say that this makes me purr but I realize this is a doggy dress. Bah.

Black & gold

I am normally a homebody. But thanks to a recent infusion of happeningness into my previously dead social life, I found myself gravitating toward more party pieces. Plus, since this cost only THB99 (about RM10), what's not to love?!

I picked up this peplum dress during my recent mad spree in Bangkok, and while it's only been out once, I reckon it's going to be a firm favourite.

While yes, I know it's a little tight at the moment, on account of me having some extra holiday baggage, it will loosen up over time. After I bust a few seams getting my groove on, hoho.

But how cute is the exposed zip? Argh. I know they're everywhere at the moment but you gotta admit it's kinda cool in an...exposed kind of way. The material, while not the best quality in the world (hey, you get what you pay for), doesn't really require ironing, and has shimmery flecks to it.

Black and gold also makes me think of that Sam Sparro song--and er, yes, the in-house brand of FoodWorks and Ritchie IGA's in Australia, but that's a different thing altogether.

Dress: THB99, Platinum Shopping Mall, Bangkok
Shoes: RM29, The Summit, USJ
Necklace: RM15, Diva (thrifted at uni bazaar)
Bracelet: SG$17.90, some shop along Orchard Road (sorry!)

Jewellery Organiser

Now you've probably gone bedoinkers in Sweet Contemplation, the next thing you need is a Jewllery Organiser! It sorts out the tangled mess of jewellery and puts the pretties on display. What could be better?

I have more (of course) But I figure they'll migrate over on their own, naturally, with time.

Gladrags

On weekends when I'm lazy and it's comfort I'm after, this has been my default dress, simply because it's so easy-breezy.

Of course, there is also the issue with the pockets this cute dress has--I adore them!

I picked up this frock at Amcorp Mall (heh, where else). When I first got it, the elastic bits at the back needed a change badly, and it also called for a lopping off of a good four inches on the hemline.

The neutral coloured accessories gave it the right touch of spunkiness--just to make sure I don't come across as a country bumpkin!

These adorable swallow earrings reminded me of tattoo designs--had to, had to have them.

Belt: RM19.90, Cats Whiskers

Do the Mel

For many of us, there are celebrities who inspire our wardrobe. My celebrity of the day is...Meldee! =D

I'm wearing a jersey wraparound dress that comes with a ribbon that ties on the left. There are frills. There are bows. The second this dress caught my eye, I grabbed the man's hand and squealed, "Looky, a Mel dress!"

I normally wouldn't go anywhere near jersey material (otherwise known to me as hoochie-wear) but I thought it was so cute and had an awesome price to match. I have mixed feelings about the white headband...as to whether or not it's bow-overkill but I wanted something on top to go with white shoes on my feet. Either that, or these pretty lace-like earrings.

It's funny. About 5 minutes after finding this dress, I actually spotted the exact copy in a polka dot print. Not to be creepy but 'The Mel' and 'The Rey' hang in my closet together :)

If this dress is not you, I are sorry...But I think it's pretty so I really meant to compliment you!

A Good Morning

The best mornings are sunny, not too early, and include pretty new dresses and sleepy beagles.
Shopping ban or no, when it's love you just gotta have it. Spotted on awesomely pretty blogshop, A Bunch of Wildflowers, I initially bought the last one available in grey. Unfortunately (or not), the lovely seller realised that the grey dress had major defects and offered to pick up this cream one from the supplier instead. I think I lucked out, the cream is way prettier.

Meldee and I were discussing how we loved contrasting "tough" gladiator style heels with frothy frou frou dresses. It makes everything edgy while keeping things pretty. Don't you think?

The Perfectly Serious dress

Being a normally chic-and-cheerful dresser-upper, it sometimes pains me (quite literally) to buy Perfectly Serious things for work because sometimes they seem so....boring. But having almost no serious pieces in one's possession can also throw one into a tizzy!

This gorgeously-cut dress, I almost put back on the racks, but thanks to Mr M's sensible persuading that a decent, grown-up dress might do my wardrobe some good especially for government functions, I assented. And he paid, tee hee.

Wool-blend charcoal grey dress: RM50, The Gap at FOS

Not to be thrown, I decided to view this dress as a blank canvas for me to dress up as the situation calls for it.

Now, while many fashion blogs do heaps of one-item-four-ways posts, I notice a lot of layering is involved. But frankly, my dears, layering in Malaysia's hot, humid climate? No thanks. So I'll do it four-ways according to moods.

Look 1: Seriously Proper

What else can be said? Snore.

Turquoise necklace: RM29.90, a store in Subang Parade whose name I cannot remember
Belt: RM15.90, somewhere in Amcorp Mall
Be-ribboned velvet shoes: RM29, a shop in The Summit, USJ

(Sorry I'm so helpful with store names, I keep forgetting to take them down!)

Look 2: Seriously Borderline Not-Serious

Sometimes a boring palette requires a pop of colour. Seeing as how Kahani and I do the black-red-and white thing often, I thought yellow/orange would make a cheery change.

Silk floral scarf: AU$4.95, Just Jeans
Ring (used to hold scarf in knot): AU$1, Cotton On
Sunnies: RM8.90 (yes, seriously), MTM at Central Market, KL
Shoes: RM34.90, Walk-in at Sunway Pyramid

If you were wondering about the ring-scarf thing, here's a close-up. I saw a girl in the Australian edition of The Bible (
i.e. Cosmopolitan, according to my secret idol, Elle Woods in Legally Blonde) who wore this with a long tank-top, and I thought it genius!

Look 3: Seriously Sweet

When you can't resist lending a smidgen of girlish charm to an otherwise boring outfit, my favourite way to do it is with a bow. Or two.

Belt and bag: Gifts from two different girl friends
Leather ballet flats: AU$29.99, Big W

Look 4: Seriously Me

Ok, I have to admit of all the looks, this is possibly my favorite. Part serious, part sweet, part sassy, it's the kinda combo I'd wear to work if I thought I'd be able to get away with wearing a leopard-print bow while asking Important People some Very Important Questions.

Thankfully, a sliver of fear of losing my job is well and truly alive within my being.

Leopard-print bow: AU$4.95, Diva
Belt: RM25 (or something), Cats Whiskers
Quilted bag: THB290, Platinum Fashion Mall, Bangkok
Sexy four-inch red heels: RM57.70, Debenhams (70% off)

Art deco

So I'm sure you've heard about wearing your heart on your sleeve, but have you ever tried wearing artwork on your body? And, er, be still able to go out in public?

When I first laid eyes on this baby I loved it, but the bright, loud, clashing colours frightened me a little (and Kahani, because she was there before me but didn't dare buy it!). It reminded me a little of kindergarten, where we'd cut out colourful shapes and go bananapots on a piece of art block.

But I have to say it was really the wraparound genius of it that got me sold--the waistband is elasticated, and therefore fits pretty well. The material is also a thick kind of cotton, which means that although it's a wraparound dress, the risk of me doing a Marilyn and showing my knickers off to the world should the wind blow is minimal.

With a dress this loud, the best way to pull it off it probably by keeping it simple--hair, accessory, and shoe-wise!

Hair-y fairylike

In the spirit of my previous fairy-dress post, I decided to showcase another dreamy-like item in my collection (and, hoho, are there many!). But this one I made myself, and you'd be shocked at how easy-peasy lemon-squeezy it is.

A few months ago, someone I know waxed lyrical over these lovely headbands from a popular local blogshop. I peeked at the link, and while indeed their headbands were lovely, and granted, more elaborate than this, the exorbitant (in comparison to what I spent on this!) pricetag made me go, "Yikes! Save your money, I'll make you one."

Many people don't realise what fun shops that sell ribbons, buttons and lace are. I popped over to the one in Old Town, PJ (the same row as Watsons--there are actually two craft shops in the same row, so all the better to head over there!) and picked up a pair of these sparkly applique things.

Yes, I do realise that they're meant to go on dresses, but I reckon things are more fun when you do what you usually wouldn't with them.

So yeah, the pair of them cost all of RM13.90. The headband, a plain black one with a flattish, velvety surface, cost all of RM2 at the local night market. With my handy glue-gun ablazin', I positioned it exactly where I wanted--and et voila, a pretty, girly headband that cost less than RM10.

Now, something to note--the applique things came in a pair, curved to different sides as they are meant to be positioned on humanoid shoulders. I made note of which side my friend's hair parting fell (opposite to mine, as luck would have it) and gave her the one that would suit her parting.

And it took me all of 5 minutes to do!

Sparkly applique: RM13.90 for a pair, craft shop in PJ Old Town
Headband: RM2 at the local night market

Charmed by Travel

I love jewellery to mean something, to have a story, a tale to tell. One of my most tresured pieces is this travel charm bracelet. You see every place I've been to that means something to me has a commemorative charm on this bracelet. While most of the charms are bought at the destinations, sometimes you just can't find one no matter how hard you look. So I do pick some up afterwards but who knows, maybe one day I'll go back and find something perfect from the same place.

Globe & Passport - well it IS a travel charm bracelet
Venetian glass & silver charm - Venice, Italy

Dragon - Beijing, China
Eiffel Tower - Paris, France
The Little Mermaid - Copenhagen, Denmark but it also commemorates Aarhus

Scooter - Milan, Italy (this was bought in the UK)
El Toro - Alicante, Spain
Blue Swarovski Crystal Heart - Luzern, Switzerland (While I know Swarovski crystal is from Austria, the blue was just the shade of Luzern's lake.)

Wombat - Melbourne, Australia (gift from my best friend, Mary)
Violin & Bow - Vienna, Austria (bought in the UK)
Blue enamled dutch clog - Amserdam, The Netherlands

London Bus - London, UK
Pretzel - Hamburg, Germany
Shamrock - Belfast, Ireland

On the train from Milan to Venice, an American asked to buy the bracelet for €200 as a gift for this girlfriend. I was disgusted he even asked. Memories can't be bought.

The bracelet is pretty full but I hope in a lifetime to weigh it down with many more charms. Wish me luck and bon voyage!

Hello Hybrid

Usually, I go to my uber boring shoe closet and mindlessly throw on one of my many Mary Janes because they go with everything. But then there are days when I'm on my feet all day and even the slightest hint of heels hurt. I must have been tired out of my mind because I felt silly enough to throw on a pair of his shoes instead!

Dress: Flame at Sunway Pyramid - RM60
Sneakers: Like he remembers where he got them and for how much...

(P.S. Petra, this one's for you!)

I recall that Petra commented on Meldee's post here that she's a fan of the dress and sneaker look. The past few days of work have been nutty enough...so sure, why not? I threw on this ultra girly strapless floral dress and nicked my man's high top sneakers for contrast. Slip on random plastic bangles and red daisy earrings and I'm ready for some reactions!

Bangles: Wet Seal & Maggie T - Roughly US$1/RM3 each
Earrings: The Curve flea market - 3 for RM10

The entire look makes me feel like I'm back in the early 90's. Unfortunately, I have never attempted the prissy-tomboy hybrid look before so I didn't feel totally confident with the whole get-up. But I admit, I did have tons of fun giving it a go. Some may look at this and think good gosh, what was I thinking. Here's the thing...I wasn't. There are just some days where doing something silly and out of your comfort zone breaks you into giggles and actually helps keep you sane.

Plus, I figure as long as I don't shock Kahani and Meldee with a unannounced lingerie and galoshes post, this can't be the worst thing I could put on!

Shopping haunts

Hello ladies,

I've been meaning to do this for a while, but never got around to it. Actually, I did blog it once, but then my browser ate the entry and I was too annoyed to tackle the post again.

Anyhoo, perhaps some of you are wondering where we three find our frocks, and at reasonable prices. I am not averse to spending on clothes, but being genetically programmed to be a bargain hunter, I'm afraid it's what I do best.

These are my top five fave shopping haunts in and around the Klang Valley:

Where: You can usually find an FOS outlet in major shopping malls, like 1 Utama, Midvalley, Sunway Pyramid, The Curve...I have it on good authority though (from a friend who works there at the headquarters) that the Midvalley outlet has the best stuff. Unless you want to go to Kota Kinabalu, which is also apparently pretty awesome.
Why: A hidden gem, as Kahani would testify after her silk Ted Baker dress find, you can find excess stock from the US featuring big brands like Gap, Ann Taylor, Bitten (the clothing line by Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker) and more. Contrary to popular belief, not all the clothes are flawed--sometimes it's only a matter of a label being sewn on backwards, or wrong sizing. Always make sure you try stuff on before you buy it, although I believe they have a one-week exchange period, with tags still on and your receipt, of course!

Price range: Anywhere between RM9.90 to RM399.90 (usually for winter coats, etc). Also, look out for their Buy 1 Get 1 Free promotions that happen twice or so a year.

Store: Two unnamed stalls at the Amcorp Mall weekend flea market
Where: Amcorp Mall is a stone's throw from the Taman Jaya LRT station in Petaling Jaya. It's also very easily accessed from the Federal Highway--look out for the big orange/yellow building! Parking is ample, with RM2 per entry on weekends I think. Being a cheapo (hee) though, I park at the Taman Jaya park and walk over.
Why: On the first floor, there is a Chinese lady, Chia, who manages a clothing booth. Here, Kahani and I find our vintage dresses. The stuff she carries are mostly in cotton. One floor up, there are a couple of lovely Malay ladies who have a nice array of skirts and tops, and some dresses. Their stuff is more of the silky variety, with polyesters and cotton-blends. They restock every week or so, and I've been told they get their stuff mostly from Japan.
Price range: RM5 to RM15

Where: The outlet closest to me is the one a hop, skip and jump away from my office in Damansara Perdana. There is also an outlet along Jalan Telawi 3 (I think) in Bangsar, and one in SS15, Subang Jaya, though I haven't been to the other two in a while. Alternatively, you can also buy online!
Why: A cheaper alternative to high street shops like Top Shop and Miss Selfridge, Cats Whiskers has heaps of variety of trendy digs in-store--best of all, it's colour coded! During their sale season they have pretty good discounts, at prices to rival that of stores in Bangkok, which is my ultimate shopping heaven!
Price range: RM10 (during sale season) to RM99.90

Store: Cosmax
Where: Level 1, The Summit, USJ (Yes, believe it or not!)
Why:Being a Subang chick with an unhealthy dislike of trips down to Kuala Lumpur city (unless it's for work, even then this is debatable) despite the cheap shopping in Sungei Wang, this store at the (crumbling, almost dodgy) Summit in USJ offers me some options, which is better than nothing, really! The styles of clothing are also very similar to what you'd be able to find in Cats Whiskers, Bangkok in general, and the profusion of shopping blogs. At much cheaper prices. As an added bonus, there are also several other similar stores around the area.
Price range: Last I saw (during the first week of September), RM9.90-RM99.90. But Cosmax also had huge signs proclaiming "Everything RM25" but being freshly shopped out from Bangkok, I refrained.

Store: Blook
Where: There's a store on the ground floor of Subang Parade, and one in the Telawi area in Bangsar
Why: While I think some of their things are overpriced, I cannot deny that the quality is also not bad. In fact, compared to Cats Whiskers, I'd probably say the quality of garments offered here is slightly better. They also have some very lovely designs that are work safe, and other more glam pieces for going out in the evenings. It's a store I love to browse in, and every blue moon or so I treat myself to something I really love, like this dress here.
Price range: RM25 to about RM200 (I think)

So that's my list for now, ladies! I'll add more as I find new places, and maybe throw in suggestions of places from my fave overseas stores. Please feel free to leave comments, or recommendations of your own!

Lace & Leather

Well ok, not quite lace and leather as both the belt and shoes are fake, but I loved the stark contrast between the romantic filmy lace dress (yep dress, wore it as a top because the skirt's a wee bit short for work) and the - let's just fess up to it - bondage-y cinch black belt and shiny black triple-strap shoes. Oh and the slightly shiny black pencil skirt. It's shinier in person.

As the day was gloomy I decided to do a Lady Melbourne inspired post, crack out my new mini tripod (I already want a full-sized one!) and take pics on el sofa (yes my friends, the Spaniards consider sofas male. Why? I honestly don't know). Sadly I lack her skills *sighs* so I hope she will forgive the pitiful tribute.

Dress (worn as a top): Cocktails & Martinis Blogshop (RM43 + RM4 delivery)
Belt: Deeper & Harder (RM24)
Skirt: Miss Selfridge on eBayUK (£5)
Shoes: Debenhams, The Curve (RM53 after 70% discount)

A note to our dear readers,

If you're wondering why Mel and I are going it solo with tripods and not taking pics of each other anymore, don't worry we haven't had a falling out. It's just that work has been busy and we simply don't have time to nip up to the roof anymore. Plus, it's been raining. A lot. Cross your fingers we'll get time to prance around on the roof again beacuse I gotta tell you, the beagles are being very stubborn about learning how to take pics.

Also I apologise if my posts disappoint a little in quality over the next two months. Life is just very very busy for me right now. But I promise to try and stay on top of things.

Love,
Kahani

ps. Yes Alex, my hair's down for the pic!

In the mood for romance

I have always been fascinated by fairies, fairytales, and the notion that True Love Conquers All.

What has prevailed through the years too is a love of books and for reading, and gifts--but in the case of the latter, don't we all love gifts?

This gorgeous fairy dress fell into my possession thanks to my lovely friend in Melbourne, whose name funnily enough really does mean "Princess". Her grandma bought this dress for her, but after wearing it only for a few hours, she decided that the dress just wasn't "her". With love, she passed it on to me--sadly I've not found the occasion to wear it just yet!

Somehow, I reckon this dress can--and should--only be worn while one is barefoot. Any other type of shoe or sandal doesn't seem to fit right with this dreamy affair.

These lovely antique-looking danglies were purchased with Kahani (who wore them here) at one of our fave stores--Diva!

In case you were wondering, this is the lovely book I am reading (have read). Filled with lovely sweet everythings written by smitten men.

And of course, there is a gem in this book, read out by Carrie Bradshaw to Mr Big, Beethoven's letter to his "Immortal Beloved"--ever thine, ever mine, ever ours.

Dress: A gift from a Princess
Earrings: RM23, Diva (after discount)
