The smocked dress I'm wearing sticks out like a sore thumb in my closet which is dominated by polka dots and florals. So, this is really something out of my comfort zone.
There was an overly persistent salesgirl at Flame located in Sunway Pyramid (Malaysia). She recommended me something out of every rack I glanced at. Nice girl, but way off on my taste. So in a quick plan to get the heck away from her, I grabbed three dresses from the rack in front of me and zipped to the dressing room. One just so happened to be this bold and bright tube dress.
I don't usually go with dresses where the smocking ends just under the bust (empire style). They tend to look like maternity wear on curvier girls. This one was no different but I loved the print and colours so much I decided to make it work. I used a faux leather wraparound belt slightly above the waist to hide where the smocking ends and where the skirt part begins. This helps the flare of the dress begin where I want it, and allows the dress to have a more flattering shape.

To kind of go with the belt, I wore a black top under the dress. I have had this top for years and absolutely love the cut-out areas in the sleeves; gives the top an off-shoulder look with a sexy twist :)

Top worn inside: Victoria's Secret Online US$15
Pleather wraparound belt: Wetseal US$5
Shoes: Clarks RM220

That wraparound belt does make a lovely difference... speaking of which is it STILL available for US$5? I've been hunting high and low for an obi belt like that!!
I bought the belt like 2 years ago unfortunately. If I see another like it, I'll be sure to pick one up for ya.
It's nice coz it doesn't slip and slide around since the part that goes against your body is like a faux suede :)
Hey Rey
I love your reintepretation of the dress. Am not a bit fan of retro prints but they tend to be quite flattering. Oh they certainly flatter you!
Kahani, they were still selling belts like that in Australia last year for AUD10. Not sure about now though. I'll keep an eye open at thrift shops as well. Should be popping up soon.
Ooooooh Rey! I love what you've done with the humble tube dress! Can't wait to try that out too.
And yeah, Eli, Supre sells (sold?) those obi belts. I scored mine, a reversible brown-gold one in 2006 for $15 :D
TY shu and mel =)
Lol, seems those belts were popular on all sides of the world 2-3 yrs ago. Now, I usually see the stretchy ones...not so much self-tied.
I LOVE the dress. You look gorgeous!
